The Deepest Breath

Mr. Johnson told us to take the deepest breath we could. Across the band hall shoulders heaved and chests puffed.

“Now, take in more air.”

We did.

It was a trick.

“If you took your deepest breath there wouldn’t be room for more.”

Jesus says God wants one thing from me.

‘Love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your strength and with all your mind’ and ‘Love your neighbor as yourself. ~Luke 10-27

God wants all. All my emotion. All my will. All my ability. All my thoughts.

All.

And this is a problem for me at Christmas. At Christmas I’m a little more patient, more kind, more mindful of others and God than usual. I discover I have room in my budget for a little more generosity, room on the calendar for a little more selflessness.

All doesn’t leave room for more. Even a little more.
