The number of obese people on the planet right now is pretty close to the number of people who went hungry today.
Coincidence?
Could it be that God, being the loving Father he is, has made enough for every child at his table? But like all children, we have a hard time sharing.
But what if we did share?
A family far away, at the other end of God’s table, would have enough tomorrow. And so would you.
Our desire is not that others might be relieved while you are hard pressed, but that there might be equality. At the present time your plenty will supply what they need, so that in turn their plenty will supply what you need. Then there will be equality, as it is written: “He who gathered much did not have too much, and he who gathered little did not have too little.” ~2 Corinthians 8:13-15
Veretax says:
Having just gone through a Upper GI Endoscopy (scope) to remove a bit of turkey that got caught, I’ve become presient of the fact that if I eat slower, take my time, and chew things the correct way that it takes a lot less to fill the stomach. Sure I might sometimes get hungrier a couple of hours later, but knowing that I didn’t over indulge at lunch or dinner makes it easier to eat a snack. Sometimes its a pudding, sometimes its an apple, but usually it doesn’t take much to tie me over to the next meal.
So I can’t help but wonder if the reason we here in the US struggle so much with obesity is because of our Go-Go life style that never sits, rests, and enjoys the simple things God has given us, like food, family, and his word.
It also breaks my heart that though we as a nation have given Billions of dollars every year to try to help people who do not have enough food that in some countries the corruption of sin in places of authority have kept it from those who truly need it. I will remember these people today in prayer, thanks for the blog Shaun, and may God use you and it today to wake more of us up.

To Veretax – unfortunately, I find there are too many people who are so worried about other countries squandering their money that it is just so much easier to sit back and justify not giving at all.
Compassion International has been awarded 4 out of 4 stars for 8 straight years from Charity Navigator, an independent auditing firm. Compassion is in the top 1% of all charities for using it’s money wisely. You can sponsor and KNOW your money will be helping to feed your child, to help their family, to give them an education, and to show them Christ. I’ve seen it work, Shaun has seen it work; find charities that work and then SHARE. God commanded us to help his children, not to let distrust of others keep us from doing so. Prayer is great but it doesn’t replace ACTION.

You said this last night in the live chat, and it tore me up. I’ve always struggled with my weight, so whether I like it or not, I’m firmly on one side of this comparison. And when I look at it like this, it breaks my heart. Thank you for making this statement, Shaun. Thank you for teaching me and so many others about Compassion, about poverty, about God’s heart for His children.

I have noticed from some of the pictures on your and the Compassion bloggers’ blogs that some of the children and their mothers are quite chubby. One sees this in some Africans as well – I assume carbohydrates are plentiful but they don’t eat a balanced diet. Do you have any concern about these children becoming more “westernized” in El Salvador and having access to sugary drinks etc? Any other observations regarding the number of overweight girls and women you saw there?
Shaun Groves says:
There’s a difference between chubby and obese. And some obesity, it should be pointed out, isn’t caused by eating too much food of course. it’s not quite that simple for every obese person…just most.
Yep, chubby in El Salvador comes from a lot of carbs I’m guessing. Lots of rice, for one thing…and Fanta ; )
