After more than 30 hours of flying without sleep I skip my usual nightly hot shower and crawl into a hotel bed. Four hours later I wake up, my body in a time zone between home and here. My eyes ache, my nerves hum just under the skin. The familiar discomfort of the first day in-between.
I take an in-between shower: cold water rains down on marble floors and polished silver fixtures.
I brush my teeth in-between: I avoid the illness carried by the tap, rinse my mouth with bottles water and spit into a granite sink.
I sit, try to still my buzzing brain and read a reminder from Paul.
And God is able to bless you abundantly, so that in all things at all times, having all that you need, you will abound in every good work. As it is written: βThey have freely scattered their gifts to the poor; their righteousness endures forever.β
Forever. Neither here nor there but in all places at all times. God is with me in this in-between.
I pull back the blinds. The sun creeps up over the horizon and into the gray of downtown Manila spread out below my window.
I’m surprised at the skyscrapers flanking me. And the mall next door. And the smoothly paved streets. As if I woke up in America.
I snap a memory.
I lower my lens and steal another.
Zoom in.
By tomorrow morning my body will be on Manila time. My nervous system will comply with the clock on the bedside table. I’ll sleep until the front desk rings my room. I’ll wake up at 7 refreshed, take a third world shower in a first world bathroom, and walk out into the in-between below.
To discover gifts scattered among the poor.
Please join me on-line this week as I do my best to document the generosity of God and God’s people here in the Philippines. Please pray. Grab a banner below. And read along as my new friends and I live in the in-between.

Such contrast… my heart aches seeing it. I am looking forward to reading the stories in these next few days. At the same time… preparing my heart for what I am going to see in person in less than two months as our family visit our Compassion daughter there!

Praying, praying, praying…. For you, your team, the people you will meet, the stories you will tell and the hearts you will touch.
Jill Foley says:
Just got back from running and praying for you and your team. There are many of us literally sitting on the edge of our seats, waiting for your words – to see the work God is doing in the Philippines.
I’m praying for supernatural energy for you all…. for the kids and staff you interact with…. for all of us, as we read your stories…
Thank you for bringing the stories to us.

I never knew what to call it, but I spend a lot of time there. Thanks for giving it a name. The in-between is a beautiful place but it can be lonely and overwhelming.
Sara says:
May you adjust quickly. I pray that God works through you and with you on this trip. May your words and images touch the hearts of millions who respond to help with a giving heart.

So many thoughts and emotions imagining you guys, knowing more this time around of what it’s like. Praying for you as you navigate the in between.
Ann Voskamp says:
This is not going to be an easy week…. heart already made lump in my throat, wrung out and brimming over.
God come by here…
*God come by here…*
And us the Body of Christ… we’ll come by and we’ll reach out and we won’t turn away and we’ll bind up wounds and free the captives and oh, the week might not be easy but it could be something far better — radically life changing, God coming by here… for all of us.
Kelli says:
Prayers being sent up for you and your team in the in-between.

Anticipating what HE is going to do…as only He can do it! May worlds and lives be rocked!
And….May ‘the in between’ pass quickly!

Following you and praying for your group. I sponsor a child in the Philippines. Like Aimee, I an both excited and anxious about what you will find and post. I’m sure I can’t even imagine the poverty. I’m so glad God is faithful to care for the poor and that His servants in the world – like your group – are doing His work.
RaD says:
I’ll be here as well as clicking over to the other team bloggers from time to time as well. God’s gonna do something big whether it be in your hearts or mine, in the physical, the spiritual, or all the places in between.

Praying for you and your team to impact and be impacted! And you all to be the the feet that can go close to my Ian and my January and everyone’s “Ian and “January” whose feet are still far away for now. Blessing to you!

Awesome pics man. They speak…loudly.
You’re in my prayers this week.

How in the world are you able to write so eloquently with jet lag???
Krisyoursis says:
Our former youth pastor (the one I still say looks like he could be your long lost brother) left his day job here as our city’s CFO and moved his family of 7 to Manilla to follow God’s call to minister there, back in December. They’re home in the US for a summer visit this week, and having just sat through a church service with their still-jet-lagged 1-year-old, I totally get it! π Blessings to you on your trip! I get to hear lots about what God is doing over there from Mike and Becky (his Becky π ), but I can’t wait to hear your take on it, too!

Hey, Shaun! Greetings from home base in Mid-TN!
Been especially interested in this trip. Our Compassion child lives on the north side of Luzon. Is your team sticking to Manilla, or will you be hopscotching around?
Would love to have you say “Howdy” directly to Aljaric (we call him “Al-Jay”). Cute kid and growing up fast.
