I don’t tune my guitar in the standard way. And this confuses a lot of people. I get asked “How’s your guitar tuned?” more than anything else. More than “How’d you get your hair to do that?” or “Are you related to Sara Groves?”
So, here’s the answer. Here’s how I tune my guitar and how to play a few simple chords in that tuning.
Cristy says:
My son, Justin, was just talking about your tuning this weekend as we were listening to the ONIK CD. The video is no longer available, but I’m sure he’d like to see it.
Shaun Groves says:
It is now. Sorry about that. Youtube has some issues sometimes.
Cristy says:
Thanks, Shaun. I’ll have him take a look at this when he gets home from summer school.
(Did you get the pics and video I sent over the weekend?)
Shaun Groves says:
I did. Thank you VERY much.
Amanda says:
I loved this “Learn Fake Guitar by Shaun Groves” video.
I own all the songbooks, and am slightly disappointed in them. I knew they sounded “off,” but anyway, thanks for sharing your “alternate tuning.”
Now about those tabs…
Chris says:
Are you related to Sara…
Sorry, couldn’t resist.
Shaun Groves says:
Uh. No.
Tim says:
I tabbed out the Chords for anyone who is interested.
Tip: Think like you are looking at a standard guitar with the neck straight up- (C#-G#-C#-G#-C#-F) The numbers are frets, zeros are open strings, and Xs are not played.
1st – 000000
6th – 024000
4th – 520001 or 52000X
5th – X02023
Your Renown Chords
440XXX
550XXX
770XXX
Don’t know what those are called.
I have two guitars so I will come up with more chords.
Correct me if any of this is wrong, Shaun.
Hope it helps.
fred says:
heyyy saunn! :]
umm quick question….
if u raise a half step from an E isnt that D?
dont u drop it down?
im still kinda confused how u tune it… sorryyy heheh
guitar lessons says:
That was cool though.. I also play guitar.. It’s really coll.. I also do the tuning of my guitar..
Ricky Sharples says:
It’s funny how as the old school of music training fades away, the quality of the music doesn’t go down. In the seventies I knew very few guitar teachers who didn’t insist that new guitar players had to relate to some established icon or way of playing.
Bill Whitt says:
Hey, Shaun. Thanks for the info on your tuning. I’ve been using 1-4-1-1-5-1 for a while, and it’s very easy and sounds great too. I got it from Crowder. Check it out:

Also, Jars of Clay uses an open tuning that is similar: 1-4-5-1-5-1 (Love Song for a Savior, etc.)!
