Lent Day 9 – Undivided

Matthew 5:8 Blessed are the pure in heart for they will see God.

Blessed are those with undivided hearts. But I’m prone to be a pharisee – dedicated to godliness on the outside, rotting eaten up with ambition and pride on the inside (Matthew 23:25-26).

While my life is destined to be more and more like the life of Jesus (Romans 8:29), my flesh must be dragged kicking and screaming into that destiny (Galatians 5:17).

To want one thing. The will of the Father.

The character of a life comes from the content of the heart. From an undivided heart comes a life singularly committed to the kingdom and ends like Christ’s: “Father, into your hands I commit my spirit.” All God’s – to the end.

I am not pure. Today I am divided. Less so than this time last year or the year before, but still divided.

There is a struggle in my heart, a fight for first place. What is competing for my affection?

Kierkegaard-Quote

Our Prayer

God, create in me a pure heart. Kill off your competitors. Be first in me today. I want to see You.
Amen
