“I really like that home song, Mr. Groves. It was like my favorite when I was eleven.”
I’m standing at the Nashville baggage claim, thankful for a weekend with incredible college students from Alabama and looking forward to not being around anyone this week who calls me Mr.Groves.
Eleven? Seriously?
Spinster-in-the-Making says:
I taught 4th grade 4 years ago and for some reason we were talking about going to concerts and I just happen to mention that I went to a Boyz 2 Men concert when I was in high school. They stared at me blankly…
“Who’s that? Never heard of them.”
I thought, surely, I haven’t reached an age where the younger kids have no recollection of things from my past. I’m only 28! (at that time I was only 24)
euphrony says:
Ouch. I guess that’s what happens when you’re older than Jesus.
Kenyon says:
Funny story Mr. Groves….just wait until they start inviting you to play at the 50+ gathterings!
shaunfan says:
Not too make you feel worse, but you’ve had 3 kids (so have I) since that home song came out Mr. Groves. So, at least that kid remembers that home song. It’s now an “oldie” for Gabriella and my oldest Natalie.
Spinster’s comments about 4th graders not knowing Boyz II Men in 2004 blows my mind. Hopefully they saw my Boyz from Philly (where I’m from) with Wayne Brady on my favorite game show “Don’t Forget The Lyrics” 2 weeks ago. In case you missed it, they won $500,000 for charity by correctly singing the lyrics to “I’ll Make Love To You” in the category Boyz II Men. The suspense on whether they’d get the words to their own song right was almost too much to take.
Rachel says:
Ouch. I think I was at least 15 when that song came out. That probably doesn’t make you feel any better.
Bush says:
haha…gramps
aaron says:
all in the heart. (age right?)
Biblefanmaryann says:
Hey, I was only like 12ish when I first found about Mister Groves. Now I’m 17, ha!
You old!
Tim says:
My friend and I went to a festival last year where Relient K was one of the headlining bands… he went up to Matt Hoopes and started his conversation with, “Oh man, I loved you in Jr. High!” (he was currently 21) Not the best first impression…
Chad Jarnagin says:
BAWWAHAHAHA!
sorry bro… that sucks.

Aims says:
How old was I when ItE came out? Had to of been High School at least. 2001…I was in the 10th grade. That doesn’t make sense if she was 11 in 2001?…She’d only be like 17 or 18 she’d have to still be in High School.
So why’s she on a College retreat if she should still be in High School?
West says:
if it makes you feel any better, I was 30 in 2001 and I just discovered you over the past coupla years….thanks to ye olde reggae muffin.
liz says:
hey – i read your blog pretty much every day.. but don’t really join in the conversation.. but i couldn’t resist adding to this discussion.. haha.. i’m almost 20 and welcome home was definitely my favorite song when i was like 12ish.
thats awesome.
Forever His Clay says:
“Mr. Groves” you sound like a teacher! I was in Jr. High the first time I heard the “home” song, and it always stuck out to me, and over the past…”few” years, shaun, it has become one of my life songs. That, sir, is a legacy, that is an awesome thing.
Ben says:
Mr Groves, it was great hearing you sing and speak this past weekend. The Beatitudes is a passage that I have not learned very much about before this weekend.
I was also 11 when that song came out, its still a favorite song of mine.
Grovesfan says:
OK, I’m feeling REALLY old now! Nancy, Cristy, anyone here gonna hobble on over to the keyboard and help me out?
Beth
Cristy says:
Here I am…finally found my cane. You know Justin was only 9 when that “home” song came out, which means I’m old enough to be those kids’ mother? I’m going back to my rocking chair…
FancyPants says:
Hey, you’re a legend. When I was 11 it was Michael W. Smith, Amy Grant, and Wayne Watson.
Not bad company in the “I listened to you when I was 11” club.
Shaun Groves says:
Good spin, FancyPants. I like.
Thomas says:
Beth are you saying that Nancy and Cristy are old? Nancy is roughly 6 months older then me and Cristy is about a year younger then me. I am not old so they can not be old.
Thomas
alan says:
You knew when you posted this you were painting a target on youself right with all the Mr. puns? Look at it this way, they could have called you Mr. Shaun. Personally I’d rahter be called Mr. with my last name attatched than with the first. What’s really scarey is when an adult calls you Mr. and your first name.
Slightly Embarrassed Bama Student says:
Um. . . so I think this post is about me. Haha! What can I say, I was a tad bit star struck!
Thank you so much for coming this weekend. It was an amazing time!
Kelley says:
I would like to brag that i was one of those wonderful alabama students!! I would just like to personally thank you for a wonderful weekend. I am now i proud sponser of a wonderful Indonesian child through Compassion International….thank you again for a blessed weekend!
Bethany says:
“That Home Song” was my favorite in the summer of ‘01…which means that I was 16, Mr. Groves! I still enjoy it to this day though! When I was 11, it was more like Amy Grant, the Donutman, Steve Green, etc… MWS didn’t come until later for me ๐
