Ladies and gentlemen, kids of all ages, prepare to be amazed. Turns out I’m the Chris Angel of the Philippines…without the eyeliner and pectoral muscles.
One of our bloggers has asked some outstanding questions about how Compassion handles its finances. So I told this story.
On my first trip overseas, way back in 2005, I boarded a plane to El Salvador to see if Compassion could really be trusted. I suspected they were a scam. I just had to figure out what that scam was. So when I visited a Compassion child development center in San Salvador, I asked a worker there if I could look inside a file cabinet. I expected her to ask a superior for permission, or ask me why, or get angry even. But instead she opened it.
I pulled out a random folder. It contained every record for one sponsored child cared for there. The worker explained what I was looking at, patiently wading through medical charts and report cards and financials. I walked away convinced. My CPA wife and I were so convinced that we drastically changed the way our family lives so that we could help more children live.
This afternoon, at a child development center in the Philippines, after telling that story, I opened a file cabinet.
I pulled out a file randomly. It contained all the financial records for the center for a given month. I flipped to a random page. It was a list of children’s names – children whose sponsors had given extra money that month so that their sponsored child could receive a birthday present. This was money above and beyond their monthly sponsorship of $38.
I picked a name randomly. The first one. “Precious.”
Now, when extra money is given by a sponsor for a birthday present, the social worker in the child development center works with the child’s family to buy something the child needs or wants. That purchase is supposed to be documented so that the child development center can prove to internal and external auditors that the birthday money didn’t buy a staff member a new dress instead.
“Can you show me the receipt to prove how this birthday money was spent?” I asked the bookkeeper?
She turned the page. And lots more until we reached a receipt.
“The child signed the receipt to verify that she had received this gift,” the bookkeeper explained.
“And also,” she said, “a photo was taken of the child with the gifts purchased.”
Well, anyone can say they have proof like that right? “Show me,” I said.
She passed the book to a co-worker who clicked away on a nearby computer. “There is the picture,” she said, turning the screen toward me. And there she was – Precious, posing with her birthday gifts. Her sponsored child number on a placard at her feet.
But here’s the magic. I asked the bookkeeper if I could photograph all this stuff and send it to Precious’ sponsor with a thank you note for her generosity. I thought knowing how carefully her gift had been handled might give the giver greater peace of mind…and keep the gifts coming to Precious every year!
The bookkeeper flipped to another page in the book. “Kristen Welch is her sponsor,” she said.
I couldn’t believe it. This child development center is the largest in the world. More than 700 children are served by Compassion through this center. I picked one folder out of many. One page out of hundreds. One child out of dozens. Randomly. And that child happens to be sponsored by my friend, Kristen Welch, who traveled with me to Kenya to blog about Compassion in 2010.
So, Kristen, I think this magic trick was for you. And your family. Don’t ever doubt that your generosity is being stewarded well by the staff at child development center PH238. Here’s the proof!
And thank you. Thank you for choosing to sponsor Precious from thousands of children. Randomly? I don’t think so.
Need more proof that Compassion operates with the highest financial integrity before you sponsor a child? Check out this page listing some of the accolades and top ratings Compassion has been given from top non-profit watchdogs and the financial press.
And then, when you’re as convinced as I am today, please choose your child from the thousands waiting to be sponsored.
Thank you in advance for doing that.
oh amanda says:
Wow. I have tears in my eyes. Oh, how God loves us! Every time I read a post about Compassion I am hit full in the face and heart with God’s great love. Thank you, Shaun for bringing us through all these trips and blogs with you to the rest of the world.
Lindsay says:
This. is. so. awesome. Really. ๐
Tsh @ Simple Mom says:
LOVED that magic trick, Shaun! So fun to witness. And sorry I blew the punch line earlier today.
Hillary @ The Other Mama says:
Unbelievable! Only God can pull that magic card! Truly amazing!
Michelle ~ Blogging from the Boonies says:
Whoa, that is intense! Kristin popped into my mind as soon as I saw that name, knowing that we have girls named Precious.
Since I did my initial research on Compassion, I have been blown away by their financial integrity. Truly a fantastic organization!
Dana Young says:
Wow! Your magic trick has definitely convinced me to sponsor my next child through Compassion rather than World Vision!
Russell Slager says:
That was a incredible. Thanks for sharing that!
Robin Dance says:
So it made me glad when I read Amanda say she had tears in her eyes over this post because, really, it doesn’t seem like one of those tear-worthy pieces and I’m rarely likely to be moved to tears from a post.
But this IS magic and magic does spectacular things.
God blows my mind. And makes me smile.
You’re good at that second part, too :).
Vanderbilt Wife says:
Thank you for sharing all that. What an amazing and wonderful story. I hope some day to travel to the Philippines and meet my child there!!
JessicaB says:
That is pretty awesome.
Also, please don’t grow a creepy magician ‘stache.
michelle says:
That is a pretty amazing trick! Thanks for asking those questions and sharing this post. It will be useful for telling my own friends and readers about Compassion.
Karen says:
i LOVE how HE is a God of details! WOW!
Kelli says:
Awesome! That’s amazing. I never fail to be awed by God and the way He orchestrates even the smallest details to prove His Glory!
Brady McCain says:
As in any good magic trick, your title misdirected me… it misdirected me into thinking you were going to tell a story of you performing some inexplicable feat with a custom Shaun Groves Soft Rocker deck of cards. I was gladly mistaken.
This doesn’t always happen, but I’ve received photos of gifts before. I like it when I see what they end up getting.
And that’s about as transparent and documented as it can get… without a continuous, one-camera shot of the entire process.
Now go sponsor a child… Are you ready?!?!!
Joelle @goldenchances says:
I just can’t get over this. I just CAN’T. And I don’t want to. This is AMAZING. I am going to tell this story til someone duct tapes my mouth and puts me in the closet! Only Jesus could do this! (The Kristin magic trick, not the duct tape part). Praying for all of you!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Michael Snyder says:
That is a beautiful thing. All of it.
ali @ an ordinary mom says:
Well, now, that’s a God-moment if I ever did see one! (or read of one…)
As a non-believer in coincidence, I thank you for sharing this story of the incredible thoughtfulness of our God! He is so good!
Lisa-Jo @thegypsymama says:
It’s like Jesus sent Kristen a love note as she’s preparing for Kenya and Mercy House and travel again to say, “See, I’m in this with you. All of this. All the way.”
What a mail man you got to be, Shaun!!
I’m all goosebumps and swimming eyes this morning.
Ann Voskamp says:
Exactly… exactly…. exactly.
Our God. Our God! He is Indescribable, incomparable, mighty to save and a thousand things are happening in this one thing. No Tricks here …. Only the laying low power of God.
Kristen? God’s hand is on you, beautiful friend…. and that is an amazing thing ~tears~
Tanna says:
That is so awesome and great to see an organization that is truly doing what they say. Our church is now looking into orphan care and adoption ministry. Compassion is one of the organizations we are considering for outreach for those families considering sponsorship. I have been looking into many options but very happy to see this post today!
Stacey says:
I’m pretty sure that (!) was for sweet Kristen at a moment she needed to hear, “It matters, what you do, how you give, and for caring!”
We worship an amazing God, don’t we?
Kristen says:
Oh my word, that is the coolest thing I’ve heard of in a very l o n g time. Sometimes our God just likes to show off like that! He is beyond amazing!
Shelly Wildman says:
Woah. How cool is God? I’ll be remembering that story for a LONG time to come.
Erika says:
Absolutely amazing…speechless.
and on a different level, so thankful for this post. In an age of skepticism, selfishness, and much deceit, the first question in many people’s minds is if the money is REALLY going to the kids. I’m sure it is arduous to keep all of the records, but what a record of responsibility, generosity and honesty!
Thank you for sharing!
Jeanne Damoff says:
Beautiful. Tears, yes. Gratitude for Compassion’s ministry and accountability and every child who now knows what is to be “precious.”
Thank you so much for sharing this story and for all you do.
We are THAT family says:
Y’all. I’m crying A RIVER. Oh, I needed this love note from God today. Thank you so much, Shaun, for asking the hard questions and never shying away from truth-one of my favorite things about you.
I needed this so much today. Thanks for being a part of this miracle!
Precious is a big part of our family and it’s an honor to be her sponsor.
Kimberly Dill says:
This is AMAZING!!! Everyone who has ever been to your house has heard about your daughters FAVORITE girl, Precious:) What a cool “God wink”:)
Jill Foley says:
Goosebumps are crawling up and down my arms – God is so good!
Shaun… since you are performing some magic tricks, could you find my formerly sponsored child and tell her it’s more important to stay in school and Compassion than it is to be a waitress? I just lost her about a month ago after 7 years of sponsoring her. If you happen to see her, tell her I love her and miss her.
Alexia says:
I actually didn’t know that Compassion was so thorough with their documentation (not that I was worried about it at all). It’s really cool to see how much care they take with the trust and money we give them! I’m glad to know the two girls I sponsor are so well taken care of!
Steve Jones says:
Blown away! I love those constant reminders that God is the one in control of this ministry.
And Kristin, of course you needed it today. That’s why He did it! ๐
Kris says:
Only God could have arranged for such a perfect and amazing string of happenings. Wjhat a crazy-wild blessing. I am sucking down this thick lump in my throat and dabbing teary eyes. HOW amazing is this Increadible God we serve?! WOw! Awesome!!!
Megan Willome says:
Makes me glad that I’ve been sponsoring children with Compassion since 1991.
Jason says:
Wow…that’s an awesome story. And I love the transparency of Compassion.
moxiemandie says:
That is SO amazing & beautiful! And Shaun, I love that you shared this for your friend- OUR friend. ๐
Such a cool thing. ๐
Aaron K. says:
Thank you for demonstrating God’s greatness for others. And thank you for proving the worth of those few dollars sent to Compassion International and their faithfulness with God’s money.
Amy says:
This is perfect. I am sharing with my friends and family who share so that I can sponsor an older child. ๐
Lindsee says:
I just got chills. Wow. Thank you for sharing that! My childs birthday is this Thursday, same as mine, now I’ll know the exact process.
Cara says:
Wow. That is awesome! Also, it’s totally awesome that you ever thought to ask to look in a file cabinet in the first place. I am blown away by how organized Compassion is. What an amazing way to honor your donors, by keeping track of everything so you can easily show how well that money is being spent.
Stef Layton says:
When my 8yr old was younger and used to ask me what a “coincidence” was – I told him I didn’t know. Now he’s older he asked again and I told him, “its a funny long word for when God is working”.
I love that you shared this with us – something so special for Kristen, but continue to fuel our love for HIM by sharing it! What we call, A God Thing. Thank you.
Lisa-Jo @thegypsymama says:
“It’s a funny long word for when God is working” – LOVE that Stef!!
Kara @SImpleKIds says:
I just LOVE it when things like that happen!
oh, I’ve got goosebumps now – fantastic!
Jesse says:
Awesome story Shaun.
I’m impressed with Compassion… and even more impressed with God.
Rachel - A Southern Fairytale says:
Tears in my eyes.
What a powerfully wonderfully amazing moment.
A Gift to everyone.
desiree says:
God knew that one was coming! haha. It is amazing how the Lord revels things to his people, coincidences that He sets up just to show His people He is in charge. I am always in awe.
Joy says:
Oh what a mighty God we serve. God is so good! Praying for you all!
Dionna says:
I’m wondering why we as sponsors never get to see the photos taken of our children with their gifts? I know mine has gotten a goat before…how fun it would be to see her with her goat??
But I loved this post – and how it inspired me to give more and above – as I’ve only done it a few times.
JD says:
Dionna,
I know that as a sponsor, I rarely used to get photos of the children with gifts, but in the past year or so, those photos have increased… perhaps it’s to encourage us to keep giving? Not sure… but what a beautiful blessing. Praying you’ll receive a photo as well. I received one a few months ago of our child in Uganda with her two goats, so beautiful! I would have loved to see a photo of the house that God built for our Compassion son in Kenya with the $75 we sent, but He has his reasons for not seeing it, perhaps…
Dionna says:
That would be wonderful if the photos increase. Letters too! My child is in Haiti…and I only get the normal updated “posed” photo and letters about quarterly.
kit says:
Wow, that’s amazing! It’s a small world, after all!
Jenn says:
Wow! That is so much better that “God found me a parking spot…” Awesome!
Christine says:
Wonderful blogging, Shaun! This is the third trip I’ve tearfully followed. Thank you for your hard work.
I want to tell you about a wonderful blogger, Laura Boggess, who is an Ann Voskamp-caliber poet. Laura is a part-time psychologist, part-time writer, a wife, and a mother of two (though not in that order). Her love for and connection with our Savior is amazing. Please consider her for a trip?

Alex says:
Yeah, try & tell me there’s no God when stuff like this happens.
I’ll just say ‘Shut up’
Liz says:
WOW! Only GOD could do that. I am moved. I am impressed. I am deeply touched. I will read this post to my husband tonight. We will find a way to fund a Compassion sponsorship. Thank you. ๐
Jacque Watkins says:
Just Awesome! God is so intimate and cares about the details, I just love that! Thank you for sharing this with us!
Christin @ Joyful Mothering says:
A-mazing. Truly amazing. God is soo good.
I posted on Kristen’s blog my experience with Compassion and I truly do recommend them for child sponsorship. This is not a gimmick ~ this is for real. From a regular gal who, along with her husband, was compelled to sponsor a child. We have never been sorry & God always provides.
Carolinamama says:
Shaun! Love reading this! I think it is a miracle more than magic! ๐ Thanks for sharing! Means even more after hearing you in concert recently! God Bless!
stephanie @ providence handmde says:
I LOVE THIS. And it’s even cooler knowing that she got a letter in the mail from Precious today, too. Unreal.
Kees Boer says:
I’m working in some Compassion centers in Bolivia right now and what Shaun just described is in every center. I recognize the reports. Every detail gets logged and is able to be audited. Thank you for posting this blog Shaun. Now, maybe I should take some photos too…. Never thought of blogging about this…. ๐ God bless you. Thank you for living what you share with others!!!
love says:
oh my stars. i LOVE this.
and i needed this. my head knows He can do anything, but my heart needed to feel it today.
thank you.
jodi @ back40life says:
what a God story – love it!
Ashley Honea says:
Wow! That is so cool for Kristen! Live the Philippines and the people there. My home away from home.
Kristen says:
So, so cool.
Stephanie T. Green says:
I give thanks for the Lord for your assertiveness in asking the questions I would’ve been too shy to ask.
Lisa says:
He knows every hair on our head- we serve a God of even the littlest details- so cool when we see that displayed so tangibly.
Our family has sponsored kids for over 23 yrs and I have had the privilege of meeting 3 of my kids face to face- I know and believe in the integrity of Compassion- but you just displayed it for people in such a wonderfully tangible way! Thank you for using your gift of communication in the way you are- so many kids are going to benefit from this. Blessings Shaun-
Joyce says:
Wow. That is all I can say. Wow.
Heather says:
Wow! I always knew deep in my heart I could trust Compassion! I always get asked “why” and “its a scam, I bet theres multiple sponsors for one child” etc.. It’s stories like these that keep me going. Thank you Shaun!! I sponsor two girls in Ethiopia.
Mela Kamin says:
Wow, God is awesome like that! What a great gift for all of you & us to see how He works through His administers of Grace at Compassion. WOO HOO! sniff sniff – fantastic! Going to write to our daughter in Kenya with extra enthusiasm and gratefulness for these kind servants.
Mindi says:
Wow! I saw Kristen’s name as I was reading, and a wave of tears and heat just flushed my body. When you were in Guatemala, I sponsored my second Compassion child–against the wishes of my husband. He was sure we didn’t have the money. He is not part of my life anymore, but God has still provided so that I can provide for Joseph in Uganda and Silvana in Guatemala. The truth is, I have never HAD the money. Never will. But God will provide it if I open my hand.
Thank you for sharing your story…and Kristen’s.
Megan H says:
Shawn, you know what Christian org I work for, and the fact that we’ve never had a scandal in 60 years, highest financial integrity, ECFA charter members, etc. But I just sent your post to a teammate and said “Can you imagine us ever being able to do this?” Really awesome, Shawn. Amazing stuff. Thanks for sharing this so richly.
Rebecca says:
Such a beautiful story of how loves us individually and collectively.
This indeed is a gift. And I doubt that He is in the details? Truly my faith is small.
Thanks for sharing this story.
Deb says:
Crying! Awesome. I read Kristen’s blog and I’m astonished!
Angela says:
Well since you guys have put it out there to be discussed I guess I can share that the “trust worthiness” of Compassion was my number one concerned. I remember hearing {some time ago} that a lot of the terrorist used these sort of programs as fronts to funnel money.
For some reason, though, I keep coming back wanting to hear more. I have told my husband of my desire to sponsor a child and am even willing to give up my beloved “Starbucks” coffee if need be.
Thanks guys for sharing.
wanda says:
That is SO like God. What a great gift for Kristen. She needed this!
Awesome!
Dave says:
Great story Shaun! I’m planning on posting a link over to this post for Feed the 5,000 – a movement here in western Washington state to get 5,000 kids sponsored this year. We’re working with Compassion and several other great sponsorship orgs, and your story is powerful. Hopefully some people read it here and are inspired to sponsor!
Jessica says:
Wow! That’s amazing! I had to laugh when the sponsor was revealed. God surely knows what He’s doing and loves to make His name known. He is good!
Sugar Mommy says:
And yet another reason we support Compassion. GOD is ALL up in it!
Praying for all of you as you head into the rest of your trip!
Lisa Buffaloe says:
Eyes swimming with gratitude. What a precious gift for us all. Thank you for sharing. And thank you, Compassion for caring with integrity.
Sandy says:
Thank you for the detailed post about the gifts. In one of our letters, it said that our childs father had some addictions. We worried that sending money to the family would possibly provide finances for his addiction. We are so glad that Compassion handles the gifts with integrity and care, and that the money helps the family and child in healthy ways!
Brenda Deason says:
I am also dumbfounded by the amazingness of this story!! What really got me, though, was that the gifts were not clothing. I’ve received a couple of photos of my sponsored child with her gifts and it is always clothing. I didn’t know it was her choice! Not that I minded supplying needed wardrobe items, but it’s really good to know that she can get whatever she wants, so she is choosing to buy clothes. I also now know that she is not actually related to me, since I hate getting clothes as gifts! : )
Pamlla says:
My husband and I sponsor 4 children through Compassion. We had used other sponsor agencies before finding Compassion and we have found Compassion to be the best. They are great about everything from stewardship of their finances, to having the children keep in touch. I will never sponsor with another agency again.
God has also used this ministry to heal me of my own personal wounds. We have suffered two miscarriages and with each one, we have chosen to sponsor a child that has the birthdate of our baby’s due date. WE figured that in our loss, God can still be glorified. And every few months when I get letters from those two children in particular, I am reminded of my babies awaiting me in heaven AND of God’s goodness to allow us to care for another little one that He loves so dearly.
Thanks Compassion!
Tsh @ Simple Mom says:
What a cool idea. I may follow suit. Thanks for sharing.
Roberta says:
So there…to anyone who doesn’t believe that God works in the most mysterious ways ;p These kinds of stories and their coincidences always make the hair stand up on my arms. Love it!
susan w says:
That is a great story! We have a similar one. We sponsor a lovely young lady in India. We’ve never met with the church who is in charge of this orphanage–they are in GA, we are in AL. This spring I heard they were taking a bunch of their members to India, to the orphanage and visit–so I joined the facebook page. Lo and behold, one of the main folks “just happened to be” the son of my favorite cousin on earth (and there are dozens of cousins!). Not “just happened to be.” Ordained. AWESOME. So he gave our little Johnsie a big hug from her American sponsors.
meghan @ spicy magnolia says:
I think this is one of my most favorite Compassion Bloggers posts since I’ve been following along the last couple of years! It definitely shows what a mighty and personal God we serve…loving every detail of what He’s knitting together in His children’s lives.
K @ Proverbs 30:8 says:
As a non-profit worker, I love, love, love hearing about well-run, trustworthy organizations like Compassion. That is some amazing record keeping.
As a sponsor, I have loved receiving a picture of our kiddo in Burkina Faso with the clothes, supplies and food he has bought with the birthday present we sent.
Amazing story, Shaun!

Wow! I sponsor at 17 year-old girl at PH238. Praise the Lord for this article. I am an internal auditor by profession so this is very reassuring to me.
