You know the story. A young ruler asked Jesus, “What do I have to do to live forever?”
Jesus asked, “You know the laws right?”
And the guy said, “Know ’em? I’ve kept them all. Since I was a kid.”
Jesus said, “Then there’s only one thing left to do: Sell everything you own and give it away to the poor. You will have riches in heaven. Then come, follow me.”
Around Jesus that day was a ragtag group of followers who shared a common purse. Judas was the treasurer. Money went in. Money was shared. But more than cash, the group shared life – dust filled walks with the Rabbi, fish for breakfast on a lake’s shore, narrow escapes from angry mobs, blind men seeing.
They shared it all.
Jesus didn’t ask the rich official to give all and then live a lonely miserable life. He asked the man to give all and join a community that would give him all of themselves.
“Then come, follow me.”

You know, this is going to sound dumb, but the significance of Judas handling the money hit me. How often would any of us allow someone like a Judas to be handling our money?
Ouch. You really hit me today Shaun.

mmmm….I liked this. I find it very hard to admit it when I need help, even though I so often do. Being willing to be that “needy” in community is hard. I’d much rather be needed, which is self-centered and obnoxious… I’m working on it ๐
Thanks for a great post.

OH my word. I didn’t ever see that the way you did Barbara. That’s a huge ouch! I hate being vulnerable but working on that as well. Thanks for the comments as well.

Thanks for the fresh view of a story I’ve heard so many times, I don’t bother to really LOOK at it any more. I’ve honestly never heard it put that way…with the emphasis on truly living in community and not on just not being too attached to meaningless stuff.
