I woke up to the sound of my two oldest kids singing – no, screaming – in the kitchen. In harmony.
I’m alive! And the world shines for me today
I’m alive! Suddenly I am here today
Why did my children start their day by belting out these words from the Xanadu Soundtrack?
First of all, their mother is home. This, apparently, makes them happy. There have been no tears. Only lots and lots of singing.
Second, their mother does not like radio and instead uses time in the mini van to expose our children to music she wishes stations would play. And stuff from her childhood. This batch of tunes includes, but is definitely not limited to, music from the Brady Kids, Dolly Parton, Katrina and the Waves, Michael Jackson, and the soundtrack to Xanadu. THese songs are their only palette for self expression. It’s sad really. Pray for their emotional and creative development daily.
Third, they are grateful that, despite three days of eating dad’s cooking, they are in fact alive.
Christine says:
What?! No “Grease” soundtrack? (One and/or two – it doesn’t matter really).
No Bee Gees? No Donny and Marie? No “Gypsies, Tramps and Thieves?” I guess if you’re trying to avoid raising any gypsies, tramps or thieves, that’s a good decision, but couldn’t one of the kids be a little bit country and another one a little bit rock and roll? And “Muskrat Love”? How will they ever come to appreciate the essence of the 70s without a little Captain and Tennille? Sheesshh….
Cristy says:
I may or may not be a little embarrassed that I knew the tune of the song as I was reading the words…I just watched Xanadu again a few months ago. Tell Becky she’s not alone… (I have to admit it wasn’t as good as I remembered though.)
Grovesfan says:
Thank you for admitting that first Cristy! I’m still trying to recover from being called “old” by Shaun last week. I knew all the songs that Christine mentioned above too. I’m now feeling this sudden desire to hook up my turntable and dig out all my old LP’s. I can’t for the life of me find my spandex pants and slouch socks though!
Biblefanmaryann says:
Yeah, that’s sad. It’s good that they are still alive though! lol
Hm, I’m not too familiar with any of those people…I mean I’ve heard some of the names and maybe a couple songs, but other than that…nope…I’m much more familiar with Christian classics (Like Eddie DeGarmo or Charlie Peacock or Steve Taylor & Some Band) than with the other kinds. :^D

Good for Becky not listening to radio, which fits the Groves family motto. But the children don’t get to hear any soft rock? It sounds like my kids hear more Shaun than yours. Sorry to tell my fellow Shaunfan’s, Xanadu is not cool. Olivia Newton-John is fine, but please no more Xanadu. What’s weird is I like ELO and especially the new downhere song “My Last Amen”, but Xanadu is so dated. Now, Katrina & The Waves will always be cool. “Walking on Sunshine” is one of the best 80’s songs ever!

hey Shaun,
First, Christine above CRACKS ME UP!
Second, I had a HUGE crush on Olivia Newton John when I was a kid. Xanadu rocks, though I can’t imagine watching it now. Somethings are best left as distant memories.
Anyway, I’m glad my kids get their singing and dancing talents from their singing and dancing mother – I have no ability in that field. I think your kids are lucky.
And I don’t know what to say about the couch. If we put one out on our sidewalk, we’d have people sleeping on it I think.

I just hope my kids survive all the “Thomas and Friends” music they’ve ingested…
