I’m interviewing singer songwriter Derek Webb tomorrow for the first ever podcast. Two questions for you: What should we call the podcast? And what questions would you like asked of Derek?

The ShlogCast
Cristy says:
Nancy, my first thought was Shodcast, but then I thought that sounded kind of shoddy. ; )
Drew Lucas says:
keep it simple… shlogcast. Done!
keith says:
You could name it like the forthcoming cd collection depending on who you’re interviewing: “One Night with Derek Poscast” or “One Night with Ralph Macchio Podcast” or you-get-the-idea. Or, you could name it after your most popular shlog post, “Shaun Groves’ Business Time Podcast,” and release one every Wednesday.
As for Derek, you could ask him how he has been so successful as a professional musician without all that cool hair. You could also ask what the baby’s name is going to be and if they know if it’s a boy or a girl. Finally, you could ask if he is concerned that singing about making out with his wife before they were married may encourage other young unmarried couples to, you know… make out.
Thomas says:
I would like to cast my vote with shlogcast.
Shaun, here is an interesting interview that Derek did with USA Today.

I do have one question though. Does Derek think that his new album The Ringing Bell is going to cause him to lose some shows like Mockingbirds did?

Grovesfan says:
I vote shlogcast too so that settles it because I know you’d never do anyting to hurt my feelings. As for the questions, I like ones that give me insight into how the songs were written, etc. What were the struggles, inspirations, etc. Not original I’m sure, but informative anyway.

Todd says:
You can have the ToddCast if you want. It doesn’t appear I’ll ever take the time to record one – especially since my inaugural show will probably feature my next door neighbor Alice (a 70-something, chain-smoking Catholic) instead of Derek Webb.
Shane says:
SHLOG-CAST!!!
Charlie Park says:
Shlogcast. Totally.
Steven says:
Shlogcast. Hands Down.
And you should totally channel Will Farrel as Harry Caray.
“Hey Derek. What’s your favorite planet?”
“Now Derek. We all know the moon isn’t made out of blue cheese. But what if it was made of BBQ spare ribs. Would you eat it then?”
Dan "da Man" says:
Ask Derek how fans are receiving the new album. Also, over the years I’ve heard plenty of dislike of his sophomore project, I See Things Upside Down, because it was more produced than the other albums. Frankly, it’s my favorite of the first three because it’s more engaging to me musically. Apparently I’m not all that impressed by a guy with just an acoustic guitar (except in a live setting).
jane says:
shlog-cast wins.
questions:
1. many musicians live of south of town, what made you want to move to east nashville?
2. if you could play a show anywhere in the world, where would that be and why?
3. is it difficult to have 2 musicians in 1 family under 1 roof making music together and apart?

Cast de Shlog
You know, for the Latin market.
shaunfan says:
I also like ShlogCast. I’ve been listening to Derek’s latest podcasts and he’s talked about how he changed his sound for his new CD.
I’d like to know after 50,000 free downloads of Mockingbird how many copies he’s sold of The Ringing Bell in the 1st week. Also, has he received feedback from anyone who downloaded Mockingbird about whether they are now investigating Christianity as a result.
Also, I’d like to know from both of you who your favorite current Christian recording artists are besides yourselves. Also, other favorite artists, like Snow Patrol, etc.
Jon says:
Ask Derek what he likes least and most about going solo and moving away from Caedmon’s
Fay says:
Is it too late for questions?
In especially in light of songs like “Savior On Capitol Hill,” and “A King and A Kingdom”: What are his thoughts on Jerry Falwell’s legacy?
I heard that he doesn’t like playing church venues? Why?
What’s the story behind “A Love That’s Stronger Than Fear”? There’s a striking contrast between the lyrics and upbeat music. “What would you do if someone put a gun to your head?” was not what I was expecting to hear after the first few riffs.
Shaun Groves says:
Fay, I’m asking the church question. I won’t ask him what he thinks of a person though. I’ve been asked that sort of thing about people I don’t agree with or respect all that much (I’m a bad person for that I suppose) and it forces me to lie, be vague or be silent – all of which are awkward. I don’t want to put Derek in that same spot.
I am asking about specific songs from Ringing Bell and I’ll be sure to bring up “A Love That’s Stronger…”
I’m not asking anything, oddly, about music. Lyrics, yes. Business and theology, sure. But not music. To me that’s not the most interesting aspect of who Derek is and what he does. His music is great, but not as interesting as the rest of him. To me anyway. And this is my podcast after all…or shlogcast, I guess it is.
Fay says:
Cool. Looking forward to the podcast
RBerman says:
FYI, last week Derek did an interview for his own board. He talked about some of these issues, including the new album’s lyrics, his current approach to theology, and the future of the Square Peg Alliance. You can listen to the interview in four parts here:

Shaun Groves says:
We only got through half the stuff we wanted to cover so we’re meeting again soon to finish this up. What we did talk about will be split over at least two podcasts. Derek can talk. Apparently. And he talks well.
I’ll post a preview when I get a chance and hopefully get the entire first episode uploaded this weekend on the road.

Nancy Tyler says:
Shaun, what recording equipment did you end up buying?
Shaun Groves says:
I didn’t. A man named Shimmy ( no comment) at WAY-FM in Nashville loaned me his very cool Mrantz recorder ($900 machine). It sounds amazing and super easy to use. Which it should be for that kind of money. Actually, it should ask the questions and edit the friggin’ audio for you for that kind of money. It did give me a nice back rub after the interview. Close enough.
Nancy Tyler says:
Very cool that Shimmy gave you total axxess to his Mrantz. Impressed with its advanced capabilities. The only special things my field equipment can do are make toast and plug quarters into my parking meter at the appropriate time.
Shaun Groves says:
Ooooooh. Aaaaaahhhh.
Nancy Tyler says:
Shimmy, I think you’re going to have trouble getting that thing back from him.
