This is comforting to me because I am raising my 15 year old son who's personality is identical to your description. Sometimes I need to be reminded of his good qualities when his "how to trick cheerleaders into dating us" mentality gets me down.

Sometimes I wish it didn't take crisis for my best self to emerge. I long for a greater awareness of the world to show itself on a daily basis rahter than just when the need is so very desperate. But I am grateful for these moments when I am, indeed, pushed beyond myself and the protective walls of my own world. I just pray that I don't go back to forgetting...

Whether it is a driver falling asleep at the wheel or the rest of us stuck in complacency, sometimes it takes something big to wake us up. Thankfully, eyes are open right now, but here's to all of us continueing to help with the needs all around us.

Would your "van story" have been on the national news? Because I have definite memories of a similar (or the same?) story happening in the south, to a Christian group, where the driver fell asleep and the vehicle rolled over. The image in my memory is of students sitting alongside a road.
