Never thought I would see a Shaun Groves / Avett Brothers juxtaposition. My first impression of the band a couple years ago was based on a song or two that seemed to glorify drunkenness, so I kind of stopped paying attention. A couple of songs (like this one) since then, however, have broken through that show a more virtuous side. Thanks for the thoughtful commentary. They definitely got skillz.

Their style kind of reminds me of a William Fitzsimmons....although with the sad lyrics that makes you want to drive your car off a bridge. :-)

Ok, first of all...so weird to be commenting here on this site design I've been staring at for months. Weird, but cool.

Second, thanks so much for this tip on the Avett Brothers! I listened to this whole song all the way through and read your commentary as they sang. I love beautiful songs that use subtle metaphors and gently guide you through a story rather than beating you over the head with the moral. I'm definitely going to be picking up some of their albums now.

Love the new look of your blog! You and your people did a great job! And indeed, those clever word-smiths do make one think a wee bit more. Cheers!

Yay! I love the Avett Brothers.

If you like their stuff, you should try Split Lip Rayfield as well. One of the band members played a car part guitar, and they had a song with the lyric, "It was just like a Gillian Welch song, except it was mine."

This is a great song. I've only heard of the Avett Brothers thanks to a song they had a on Friday Night Lights. I'll definitely check out some more of their work.
