A group of gifted artists (photographers and musicians)and I, who have been to India a number of times and are committed to the long haul of sponsoring a school for Dalit children (catch breath) would like to use the thoughts (verbatim) from this post to highlight some of the artwork. Your words perfectly articulated what we want to live out after our trips to India. Do we have your permission? Lori Taylor

Wow, that MLK quote resonates with me. Also the comment from Texas in Africa…
I want that trip to stay fresh in my head.

Thanks for your post Shaun. Sometimes I need a reminder to integrate the sobering reality of what you saw in The Dominican Republic with what it means to live here in the U.S. and as you said so eloquently about your new song Kingdom Coming “our citizenship is in heaven and unlike the kingdoms of this world the kingdom we serve has no borders and no flags and no end.” Thanks for that reminder and your ministry.

Great analysis. I tend to be a dweller, too, and I relate to those circumstances you described with your kids. Integrating is so hard, but thank you for pointing out that it’s possible. It’s not a compromise; it’s a freedom to be used by God in the place that we are.
God bless you for going, and welcome home.

Thank you for sharing so much about Compassion, Shaun. You - and the DR trip bloggers - have really opened my eyes and touched my heart.

"Oddly, folks who choose to ignore what they’ve experienced in the third world, in my experience, think they’re being tough. Ironically, it’s their weakness, their inability to deal with what just happened to them that’s in play.”

There is a long distance between ‘tough’ and ‘strong.’

"Because the sights and sounds and smells of it are stuck to our insides like the parasites we brought back with us. But there’s no Cipro to flush the experience of poverty out of us.”

I was looking at Kiva groups seeing if I could see a pattern in high giving rates. I’m not sure 15 minutes qualifies as research, but the people that stood out to me the most were oil services folks who has spent time overseas.

Personal Experience with Poverty + An Opportunity = People who Sacrifice to Help Others

Really, some of these people are incredible.

Great post, Shaun.

I do think there’s one other option, which I don’t know what to call other than Sell All You Have and Give it to the Poor. I’m not strong enough to do it, but I have a suspicion that that’s the one that leads to freedom.
