“That is a Hartebeest,” Emmanuel, our guide through Murchison Falls National Park, pointed out the van window at a deer-like animal with a long face and twisted horns. “They are very dumb.”
Lions love to hunt the Hartebeest, he explained. They chase the Hartebeest for a while to tire it out and then stop suddenly and hide.
The Hartebeest looks around, sees nothing, Emmanuel said, and thinks, “Why am I running? I think I will eat instead.”
The Hartebeest easily forgets it’s being hunted.
“But the lion,” said Emmanuel, ”never forgets.”

A couple of dumb Hartebeests.

An unforgetful lion.

So – we should be lions not Hartebeests? Thank you for clearing that up – because like so many of your readers who have NOT been to Africa – I thought elephants never forgot. So now it all makes sense – the Lion of Judah makes more sense than the elephant of judah anyway.
LOL on Linda Sue’s comment!!!!
This was so random…and I loved it. Naturally.
“I think I will eat instead.” ha!
Often, the most effective strategy is not a frontal assault. Just lure the dumb Hartebeest into feeling comfortable again.
Smart lion.
Your facial expression compliments the other subjects perfectly in that first pic.
I loved the parable! Satan is just like that isn’t he. We should always be on guard so we don’t become ensnared by his hoodwinked attempts to make us stumble.
You all were privileged to see so many things while in Uganda including wildlife that many biologists dream of seeing in person. I’m so jealous.
Oooooh…good lion parallel. I liked it.
Great story! Great pictures!
I met you at the Westfield, IN concert and we chatted about my new book to help women want to end poverty.

Oh yeah. Great parable. Great way to get a better understanding of what a lion is like. Great way to remember 1 Pe. 5:8.
p.s. I get the parable, too…although perhaps not right away. Maybe.
Did you see one get eaten?
Like this parable. Unfortunately, I think I’ve been hartebeestly before and forgot the roaring lion was after me. Hope I don’t forget the lessons learned from being a hartebeest.
