We’re all poor in spirit.

“In spirit” is an important phrase. Even the physically wealthy are poor in spirit. The church in Laodecia God says at the end of time..."You say, ‘I am rich; I have acquired wealth and do not need a thing.’ But you do not realize that you are wretched, pitiful, poor, blind and naked.” (Revelation 3:17)

As far as tools. I’m not real sharp, man. I’ve studied the beatitudes now for three years. It’s taken me that long to grasp them well enough to write about them on a very basic level. I can only credit the stack of books I’ve read over that time. The best being by William Barclay (his commentary on Matthew) and John Stott’s book “The Message Of The Sermon On The Mount.” They then point to other sources that I then read, and those books point to other sources, and on and on.

It’s a web of research really. I’m a bit obsessive. And for me it’s a hobby that’s fun - pick a subject and try to master it. It’s a habit.

Great thoughts. Got a couple questions. Because you came up a good answer i’m interested in how you got it. What tools or methods do you use in studying? This is an area I need help in.
Also, Your saying that the comforter or holyspirit comes along side you when you are as described in the scripture, but about when your not. What about when your Mr. Confidence man? Its almost like its saying that thats where God is(with the poor). And I know I’ve heard people say that alot(Bono said it). You want to see God? Go to the poor.

Yes it does...thanks.

It would be so helpful for many people to do more careful study of words and phrasing in the Bible, I think. We all can get so caught up in the “Christian-ese” buzz-words that tend to fall out of our mouths without even a thought…

i think it’s cool the way The Message paraphrases that passage..."Blessed are those that are at the end of their rope.”
